This Once Saddler’s Shop Now a Rustic Deli Hides a Peaceful Garden With Unforgettable Views

Nestled in one of England’s highest towns, where the layout of Shaftesbury’s High Street has remained largely unchanged since medieval times, The Shaftesbury Deli is a shop steeped in history—and now, joyfully revived for a new generation of food lovers.

Steeped in History

There’s something undeniably magical about stepping into a place that wears its history with pride.

The Shaftesbury Deli lives in an old High Street building that has seen many lives over the centuries.

A hundred years ago, it was a saddler’s shop—look up and you’ll still spot the original iron hooks on the walls, once used to hang heavy leather harnesses.

Later, the space transformed into a florist, and traces of that era remain in the garden out back, where old flower beds still bloom with hints of the past.

And then there’s the cellar. Tucked beneath the shop, this vaulted storage space sparks whispered rumours of a link to Shaftesbury’s fabled network of underground tunnels.

No secret door has been found yet… but that air of mystery lingers.

Local Owners, Local Love

The deli’s newest chapter began in the autumn, when Niki and Alex, a duo of food lovers, took over the reins.

Alex, born and raised in Shaftesbury, has deep roots in the town and a fierce commitment to keeping the High Street alive.

“I grew up in Shaftesbury, so seeing our High Street thrive means everything to me,” says Alex. “By championing local products and investing in this shop, we’re helping make sure the town’s heart keeps beating strong.”

Together with Niki, the pair are building something special. “We love connecting people with the amazing foods made right here in Dorset,” says Niki.

“Our deli is a place where local producers can shine, and customers can discover something new every visit.”

They’re not just talking the talk, either. The deli employs local people, buys from local suppliers, and positions itself as a hub for regional food talent.

It’s the kind of place where you might bump into the very producer of the cheese or chutney you’re buying, and where every pound spent helps keep Shaftesbury vibrant.

And in a gesture of community gratitude, unpaid carers with a Forward Carers card receive 10% off and a free hot drink, because supporting those who care for others is part of what makes a community thrive.

A Treasure Trove of Dorset Delights

Cheese lovers, take note: the deli’s counter is often called the best in North Dorset—and for good reason…

It’s a glorious, fragrant showcase of award-winning local cheddars, creamy bries, and tangy blues just waiting to be tasted.

But cheese is only the beginning.

You’ll also find rare and wonderful things like Dorset-grown wasabi—one of the few places in Europe where real wasabi thrives.

There are jars from Olives Et Al, packed with heavenly olives perfect for elevating your cheeseboard.

Fresh Panary Bread, made at Cann Mills using Stoates stoneground flour, brings hearty tradition straight to your table.

Meat lovers will love The Real Cure’s award-winning charcuterie, while sweet-toothed shoppers can pick from Chocolate Arthouse truffles, or Dorset With Love jams and chutneys.

And for something golden and truly local, Champion’s fragrant Dorset honey is a must-try—you might even meet the beekeepers in person.

Need a pick-me-up while you browse? The deli is proud home to Gold Hill Coffee, roasted just up the hill and best enjoyed in-house while browsing for treats.

The deli also features a tea room where you can enjoy a drink and something to eat.

A Secret Garden Retreat

The surprises don’t stop at the front door. Wander through the deli and down a steep set of steps, and you’ll stumble upon The Secret Garden—a tranquil courtyard with stunning views over Melbury Hill.

Once a forgotten patch from the florist days, this garden has been lovingly transformed.

Now it’s a peaceful space with flowers, cosy seating, and they are introducing a kitchen garden for the Deli, before-and-after photos that show just how far it’s come.

It’s the perfect place to enjoy a slice of cake or one of the deli’s award-winning scotch eggs, while soaking in the Shaftesbury sunshine and rolling Dorset hills.

Whether you’re catching up with friends or just taking a quiet moment for yourself, everything tastes a little better out here.

Come Experience It for Yourself

The Shaftesbury Deli isn’t just a place to shop, it’s an experience. With history in the walls, passion behind the counter, and a garden full of charm, it’s fast becoming one of the town’s most beloved destinations.

So next time you’re in Shaftesbury, pop in. Say hello to Niki, Alex and the team, explore the quirky corners, and treat yourself to a true taste of Dorset.

From saddle hooks to scotch eggs, every detail tells a story. You’ll arrive as a visitor—and leave feeling like a local friend.
