The Isle of Portland is a unique and interesting place in Dorset. It is a tied island famous for its rugged coastline and is a popular spot for outdoor adventures such as kite surfing, abseiling and rock climbing.

Portland is the southernmost part of Dorset. It is just four miles long and a mile and a half wide.

Although small, it offers an abundance of interesting sights and activities. One landmark is the Portland Bill Lighthouse and Visitor Centre, which is one of the town’s most popular points of interest and a top tourist attraction worldwide.

Portland Race is the name given to the waters by Portland Bill. That area of the sea is known to be particularly hazardous, and for hundreds of years, it has been notorious for many shipwrecks.

During Roman times, beacons of fire were lit to warn ships. As time passed, two lighthouses were commissioned and were in use from 1716 to 1906.

Portland Bill Lighthouse replaced the previous two lighthouses and has become a distinctive landmark since it first flashed its light in 1906.

The 41-metre-high grade II-listed building has been used for over 100 years to guide ships away from dangerous waters.

🚢 Fun Fact: Portland Bill Lighthouse would have witnessed the Titanic sail past on its journey from Belfast to Southampton and back.

When visiting the magnificent lighthouse, visitors can explore the visitor centre.

Informative displays and exhibits educate visitors on the history of the Portland lighthouses and their keepers.

Then, they can take a guided tour of the lighthouse with friendly and helpful tour guides, who will help them discover the history and local information.

Visitors can have a unique experience climbing the 155 steps to the top of the lighthouse, marvelling at the breathtaking views whilst peering through the lighthouse windows, and will get to explore the lantern room.

🛟 When climbing the steps, all visitors (including children) must be able to climb up and down alone and sensible shoes must be worn.

The original lens, which weighs three and a half tonnes, is located at the base of the lighthouse.

It is an example of Edwardian engineering and has looked out across the English Channel for hundreds of years.

In 2019, the lens was replaced with the latest LED technology, ensuring a longer and more efficient service.

The visitor centre also has a quirky gift shop that sells souvenirs, greeting cards, nautical memorabilia, jewellery, Christmas decorations and many other items.
