Step Inside Dorset’s Walled Garden And Discover Five Acres Of Pure Magic

If you’re after a day out that mixes calm spaces with a little bit of fun, The Walled Garden in Moreton is one of those Dorset places that keeps people coming back.

Just a short drive from Dorchester, this restored five-acre garden is full of colour, winding paths and quiet corners where you can sit and breathe it all in.

Take a slow wander and you’ll notice how much variety is packed into the grounds.

Beds of flowers, shady trees, and little paths that make you want to see what’s around the next bend.

Families often head straight for the play park and Animal Acre.

Children love meeting the friendly animals or hopping on the ride-on tractors.

It’s the kind of space where little legs can run free while grown-ups enjoy a cup of coffee.

Speaking of coffee, the Dovecote Café is a big part of the experience here. They serve up breakfasts, lunches, fresh bakes and amazing cream teas.

And if you’re more of a lunch-time visitor, think toasties, sandwiches, hearty meals and scones that don’t last long once they hit the table.

Dogs are welcome too, so if you’re on a walk or cycle with four-legged company, this is an easy stop for food, water bowls and a shady rest.

What makes The Walled Garden a little different is what happens behind the scenes.

It’s also home to Employ My Ability, a specialist college for young people with learning disabilities and additional needs.

Every coffee poured, every bed of flowers tended, every shelf in the gift shop is part of their training. By spending time here, you’re supporting students as they build confidence and skills for the future.

🎉 This year is extra special as both the garden and Employ My Ability mark their 10th anniversary.

To celebrate, a Garden Fete will take place on Sunday 21st September, 10am–3pm. Expect:

  • Local craft stalls
  • Garden games
  • A BBQ run by the Dovecote Café team
  • Face painting and a bouncy castle
  • A relaxed community vibe with good food and friendly company

And dog lovers, here’s the highlight. After the summer heatwave moved the annual dog show online, the winners will finally get their moment in the spotlight with a prize ceremony at the fete.

Hosted by Chrissy, the garden’s Animal Care Technician, alongside nurses Jenny and Sarah from Dorset County Hospital’s SCBU ward — it promises wagging tails and a big round of applause.

If you fancy a visit, here’s the need-to-know:

  • Adults (over 18): £3
  • Under 18s: Free
  • Season ticket: £10.50 (12 months entry plus free event access)

Whether you’re here for a peaceful stroll, a cream tea with friends, or to join the celebrations in September, you’ll find a warm welcome.

Come along, enjoy the gardens, and be part of something blooming great 🙂

For directions, event updates and opening times, check The Walled Garden’s website before you set off.

Born and raised in Dorset, I've lived most my entire life in Poole and Bournemouth. I have a deep appreciation for my local area and a passion for travelling. The best hikes for me are in the pouring rain—there's nothing quite like it!
