The Isle of Portland is well known for its famous Portland stone, traditional Portland Bill lighthouse and rugged coastline, offering some of the best views in Dorset.

It is also well known for having many unique attractions unlike any other in the area from pirate graveyards, Tout Quarry and the historic Portland castle.

Another lesser known attraction and one that is steeped with history and ghostly tales is the Verne High Angle Battery.

Known as ‘The Ghost Tunnels,’ it has been disused for many years and is now a popular tourist attraction for all to explore.

This late Victorian gun battery was built between 1892 and 1896 as part of Britain’s coastal defence system.

It was designed to house and operate large artillery guns to help defend Portland against invasion.

The guns would be able to fire shells at a high angle towards attacking ships by Portland Harbour.

The battery was built in a disused quarry and below ground level; this gave an advantage as it was undetectable from oncoming ships.

The flat surface could be covered with grass, leaves and other natural items to make it blend into its surroundings.

It features 6 large gun emplacements, a telephone room, a laboratory, a troop shelter and two underground stores. Tracks and ramps were used to deliver shells to the guns.

Due to the invention of faster, smaller boats that the guns were less likely to hit, the battery was decommissioned in 1906.

There is some evidence to suggest it was used for various reasons during World War I and II, but it has mostly been disused and abandoned ever since.

Although the underground tunnels are closed to the public, today, tourists and visitors can check out the open areas.

The site is fantastic for exploring and now boasts lots of flora and fauna. On a clear day, amazing views of Weymouth and Portland can be seen for miles, adding to the experience.

Many people, when visiting, have claimed that they experience an eerie feeling. If visiting during quieter times, it is a remote and quiet area, adding to the spookiness.

As the battery has been named ‘The Ghost Tunnels, ‘ it’s only right to mention the ghostly goings-on.

Many people have said to encountered footsteps, weird noises and banging. Other reports have said they have heard whispering, screams, and a man asking for help.

Are you brave enough to explore this ‘haunted’ historic site?

It’s a great spot for all ages, and dogs are welcome. The battery can be found next to Fancy’s Farm at the top of the island.

Have fun exploring!
