Portland was a likely target for enemies as Portland Roads was an important deep water anchorage.
Portland Castle is one of two forts that Henry’s builders provided to defend Portland Roads, Sandsfoot Castle being the second.
Portland Castle is located on the southern shore, whilst Sandsfoot Castle is to the northwest towards Weymouth.
The castles could work together to protect the area.
Over the years, the castle has seen many battles and fighting including the Civil War and even played a part in World War I, becoming an arms and ammunition store and occupied by soldiers during World War II.
In 1955, the castle became a place for visitors, giving people the opportunity to explore the grounds and learn about its vast history.
