Dorset holds a whole host of interesting historical landmarks and amazing coast and county stretching for miles.
There is a countrywide landmark that is still to this day steeped in mystery and intrigue and that is stone circles.
There are about 900 stone circles in the British Isles, around 30-40 in the South West. The most famous is Stonehenge.
Four of Britain’s stone circles can be found in Dorset.
No one truly knows the meaning of stone circles. However, it is believed that they may have been used for religious rituals, marriage ceremonies or community decision-making.
Situated between Abbotsbury and Littlebredy, you’ll find the largest stone circle in Dorset, The Kingston Russell stone circle.
Also known as the Gorwell Circle, set upon a chalk hilltop with amazing views over Abbotsbury and the sea, you’ll find 18 visible stones said to date back to the early Bronze or Neolithic age, around 4000 years ago.
They are around 60-90 feet in diameter and some have fallen and now lay flat. They are also lots of different shapes and sizes.
The site is only accessible on foot and is a popular spot for dog walkers. The fields can get muddy, so appropriate footwear is a must.
When visiting, you’re met with amazing views and a sense of peace in the beautiful countryside surroundings.
🍃 If the grass is long, the circle can be hard to spot. Keep a lookout when visiting.
As with many stone circles, there is an air of mystery about them, leading to tales of folklore.
A popular tale about the Kingston Russell stones is of a farmer named Russell and a wizard. The farmer lived near the circle, and on a midsummer’s Eve, he would take a walk to the circle.
One year, Russell noticed an extra standing stone; on closer inspection, he saw a crack in the stone, revealing a doorway.
A wizard then steps out of the doorway and tells Russell that he is the keeper of the stones and that they are doorways to other worlds.
