Located within the trees and along the river banks of the River Stour, you’ll find a hidden, abandoned railway bridge.
Known as Lady Wimborne Bridge, this disused gothic structure is now a pretty lookout located in a popular dog walking spot, sitting grandly for passers-by to admire.
Here is a brief history guide and the location of the bridge for you to explore on your next outing.
The bridge is situated along the old carriage drive towards Canford Magna (now a private school).
Sir John Guest took ownership of Canford Magna in 1846 but sadly passed away in 1852. The bridge’s construction was financed by Sir Johns’s wife, Lady Charlotte Guest and was the work of architect Charles Barry Jr, who built the bridge in 1853.
Originally known as London and Southwest Railway Bridge 77, its elaborate carvings are an indication of the power the landowners had on the railway companies in the 19th century.
🟢 It is unknown how the bridge ended up being called Lady Wimborne Bridge, as there is no evidence during the 19th century to suggest why. It does, however, sound slightly more appealing than London and Southwest Railway Bridge 77.
To get to the Lady Wimborne Bridge, you first need to travel to Oakley Hill in Wimborne. Located down that road, you’ll come across the road sign (pictured above).
It can be found next to the Canford Bridge. There is on-street parking along Oakley Hill and neighbouring roads.
Once you’ve seen the road sign, come off of Oakley Hill, and you’ll find yourself in this gravel driveway.
A picturesque 19th-century turnstile is located at the entrance of the pathway, inviting you in on your adventure to the bridge.
Follow the path along. The walk is scenic and peaceful, adding to your experience.

Once you’ve walked for a few minutes, you’ll spot the bridge standing proudly within the woodland. It resembles a gatehouse to a manor house rather than a railway structure and was built in such a way as to impress people when visiting Canford Magna.
The last train to run across the bridge was in 1977, and today, the structure is a Grade II-listed building.
Walkers who are exploring the area can walk to the top of the bridge and use it as a lookout during their hikes.
The bridge is a fascinating landmark in Dorset and one that many don’t know about, making it a beautiful hidden gem. The surrounding area offers lots of scenic walks, and Wimborne town is close by.
