If you follow the winding road along Bowleaze Coveway, you’ll eventually spot a little gem perched high on the clifftop, The Lookout Café.
It’s a simple spot, but with views that will make you stop in your tracks.
Inside, things are relaxed and unpretentious.
Wooden tables, cheerful staff and the smell of coffee brewing make it a cosy place to pause, especially if the weather outside is a bit wild.
But the real magic is outside. Rows of picnic benches line the grass, giving you front-row seats to one of the best panoramas in Weymouth, sweeping views across the bay toward Preston Beach and over to Portland Harbour.
On a clear day, you might even see cruise ships anchored in the bay.
🐾 Good to know: Dogs are welcome outside (and there’s even dog ice cream on the menu).
Food here is hearty, straightforward and hits the spot.
The full English is a favourite, golden hash browns, bacon, sausages, mushrooms, beans, eggs and buttered toast.
Now that’s a breakfast that will set you up for a cliff walk.
If you fancy something a bit more indulgent, the loaded chilli cheese fries are a winner.
Crispy chips piled high with beef chilli, melted cheese and a dollop of sour cream. How good does that look?
And if you’ve still got room, the cake counter is dangerous – generous slices of Victoria sponge, zesty lemon sponge, rich chocolate fudge and perfectly crumbly carrot & walnut cake, all begging to be taken home (or demolished on the spot). 😋
To wash it all down, smoothies and iced drinks are perfect in the summer sunshine, while in winter a steaming mug of coffee hits the spot.
One of the joys of The Lookout is that it feels part of the landscape.
You might see riders trotting by on horseback, kites soaring above the cliff, or a helicopter humming across the horizon.
Stay long enough and you’ll be rewarded with skies that change colour by the minute. Sunset here is a show worth sticking around for.
