Every Step Of This Dorset Hike Reveals New Wonders From Medieval Chapels To Stunning Coastlines

Walking in the countryside offers numerous benefits, and Dorset boasts endless trails of coast and country, ready for keen hikers to explore.

From beautiful sea views, towering cliff tops and rolling hills, there is so much to see.

Visit the picturesque village of Abbotsbury for this circular trail, offering a challenging walk with the advantage of some of the best views in Dorset.

Here’s what to expect along the way.

Alltrails / Eric Mccoy

This trail is approximately 12 kilometres long and will take 3.5 hours to complete.

You will start in the village of Abbotsbury, where parking is available in the village car park, as well as places to eat and drink if needed.

Although small, the village is not without its charm. From rows of chocolate-box houses and thatched cottages, it is a lovely place to begin your hike.

You’ll get started with some amazing views of Chapel Hill. From here, you can see out into the ocean and spot the beautiful remains of St Catherine’s Chapel.

Towards the end of the walk, you will see the chapel up close, so enjoy the various angles and views as you go.

Depending on the weather conditions, some areas may be very muddy, so wearing appropriate footwear is essential.

Grazing cows, sheep and horses can be seen, adding interest to the walk and a lovely countryside atmosphere.

Dogs on leads are welcome, but be mindful of the animals as you walk by.

Walking through them will give you a sense of calm and happiness as you connect with the natural world.

During your journey, you’ll walk along the South Dorset Ridgeway. A ridge of land rich in history and offering breathtaking views of the Jurassic Coast.

There is also an opportunity to visit Abbotsbury Castle, a historic Iron Age hill fort.

It is said to have been occupied by the Celtic Durotriges tribe before the Romans conquered it.

From the ridgeway, you’ll see amazing views of Chesil Beach. An 18-mile-long shingle tombolo.

It connects the Isle of Portland to the mainland.

It’s a popular tourist spot and a designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

With plenty of opportunity to walk along the beach. This is a perfect spot to relax, enjoy a picnic or sit and reflect.

There are many ascents and descents during the hike, which may be accessed by stairs or steep hills, so take care during your visit.

When you have completed most of the route, you may be feeling tired from the journey, but you are then treated to a chance to visit St Catherine’s Chapel.

An area of interest and offering amazing views across Abbotsbury and the Jurassic Coast.
