Hiking is such a great way to keep fit and promotes good mental health. There’s nothing better than standing on a cliff after a climb, feeling the wind in your hair and taking in the amazing surroundings.
Dorset offers lots in the way of great hikes with miles and miles of Jurrasic Coastline to explore; you’ll never get bored.
This hike is a circular trail and starts in Kingston, a small village roughly 2 miles south of Corfe Castle, going past lots of Dorset landmarks such as Dancing Ledge and Winspit Quarry.
It is a challenging and long route, at 18.2 km and should take around 5 hours to complete.
This is not a hike for the faint-hearted, as there are many different terrains and heights you will go to during the walk.
It’s worth it with all the interesting landmarks you’ll see and the sense of achievement when you reach the end.
After starting, one of the first sights you’ll come across is the striking St James Church.
With its gothic and unique architecture, this church is a beautiful sight to start your walk.

The paths vary, and appropriate hiking equipment is a must, such as good hiking boots, walking sticks, lots of water and snacks.
The paths can go from being flat even surfaces to rocky and muddy ascents and descents.
Here a rope is a handy way of helping you up the steep slope. Be aware that some surfaces may be muddy so stay sensible and cautious along the cliff edges.
Along this hike, you’ll see Champmans Pool, a truly breathtaking site and great for lots of photo opportunities. You can see for miles, and the vast country mixed with the turquoise sea will instantly make you forget the steep climb up to the top.
Take a break at the Royal Marine Association Memorial, sit and listen to the sound of the countryside and take a breath.
Going on the hike and getting the exercise is the reason for you being here, but sitting, reflecting and taking a break can re-energise you, and the memorial place is a perfect spot for just that.
Another spectacular sight on this walk is St Aldhelms Chapel, it is open and free for anyone to go have a look inside, an almost haunting place perched on the cliff top full of history.
The views from up here are amazing, and the chapel is a must-see when walking by.

What makes this hike brilliant is the many attractions you’ll find; Winspit Quarry is a unique and interesting place to explore.
You can read more about Winspit Quarry here.
Now abandoned and very few people around, this quarry is full of tunnels, ancient ruins and ocean views.
Be cautious around the quarry as there is sometimes falling debris; also, some parts may be closed off, so please respect those areas.
Walking along the clifftops will make you feel on top of the world and make you feel alive.
After taking lots of photos and taking in Winspit, a short walk away, you’ll find the stunning Dancing Ledge.
Remember to pay attention to any signs that are for your safety. The area is very remote and can be dangerous.
The Dancing Ledge gets its name from when the waves wash over the flat horizontal surface at the bottom.
The movement of the water makes the ledge look like it’s dancing.
During certain times, there is a small pool (pictured) that many wild swimmers like to enjoy.
💡 Note: If you want a fully mapped-out route of this walk, you can see it on AllTrails here.
Hidden away down The Priests Way walking path, you’ll come across the Spyway Dinosaur footprints.
Nestled in a working quarry and easy to get to, you’ll see fascinating footprints made by dinosaurs 145 million years ago.
A fun attraction to explore on your hike.
Next up, you’ll come to Worth Matravers, a tiny, picture-perfect village; there, you’ll find The Square and Compass Pub, a quaint and beautiful little spot.
Have a break, a cold beverage and a moment to chill after completing most of the hike.
Located at the pub you’ll find a tiny yet fascinating museum where you’ll see a lovely collection of local fossils and other interesting finds found in the Purbecks.
Lastly, and I’m sure you’ll be in heaven knowing that a pub, The Scotts Arms, is the final destination.
If you skipped having a drink in Worth Matravers, then you’ll be sure to go in here after completing an 18km hike!
Serving food and drink every day, you’ll be delighted to sit back, relax and enjoy the views of Corfe Castle.
There are also rooms available to stay in overnight; if you want to extend your stay, then the comfy modern rooms in this cosy country pub will relax you after a mammoth walk.
