Shutes Lane is a place full of magic, mystery and intrigue.
Famous for the faces in the walls, you sense an eerie atmosphere and ‘all eyes on you’ as you wander down the lane.
The lane is known as a holloway, which is a road or track that is lower than the surrounding land on either side.
Holloways can be up to 10 metres deep, making you feel tiny in the vast walls entangled with trees and plants.
Close by, you can find the appropriately named Hell Lane, a dark trail that looks like it is straight from a fairy tale, with its wild tree roots wrapping around the walls, giving a spooky vibe to your countryside walk.
You can find these unique holloways connecting to the tiny village of Symondsbury and North Chideock in Dorset, which are popular for walkers, artists, photographers and horseriders.
These mysterious pathways are full of history and magic, unlike any other country walk you might have encountered.
They are thought to be at least 300 years old!
The faces and eyes on you give you the feeling of not being alone and give the lane a mysterious vibe, like something from a storybook or film.
These holloways are guaranteed to spark conversation and open up anyone’s imagination to the wonders that have gone on in these winding and enchanted lanes.
