Portland is a beautiful and unique part of Dorset, famous for being a tied island, connected to mainland England by a road and Chesil Beach.

Portland is steeped in history and offers lots in the way of things to do and interesting places to see.

Whether it’s visiting the Jailhouse Cafe, the sculpture park Tout Quarry or stumbling across a pirate graveyard, Portland is a wonderful place to visit.

Along the seafront you’ll find Portland Castle, a place built to defend against invasion and today is a historical English Heritage site for all the family to enjoy.

The castle was constructed on the order of Henry VIII between 1539 and 1541 and was made from Portland Stone.

It was built to protect Portland from invasion by France and Spain.

Portland was a likely target for enemies as Portland Roads was an important deep water anchorage.

Portland Castle is one of two forts that Henry’s builders provided to defend Portland Roads, Sandsfoot Castle being the second.

Portland Castle is located on the southern shore, whilst Sandsfoot Castle is to the northwest towards Weymouth.

The castles could work together to protect the area.

Over the years, the castle has seen many battles and fighting including the Civil War and even played a part in World War I, becoming an arms and ammunition store and occupied by soldiers during World War II.

In 1955, the castle became a place for visitors, giving people the opportunity to explore the grounds and learn about its vast history.

Although small, the castle offers a lot. The stories and lives that have happened within the castle and the 450-year history make it an exciting place to visit.

A Tudor kitchen gives everyone an opportunity to discover what life was like during those times, from the food that was eaten to the way it was cooked.

Everyone can enjoy the grounds, with activities for children such as dress up games and puzzles to adults with the free audio tour whilst wandering the historic site.

Children-focused events and activities play out during the year, including Halloween trails and Christmas activities.

The Captain’s Tearoom is a delightful spot offering hot/cold drinks, light bites, fresh sandwiches, and scones served with clotted cream and jam, the perfect place to relax after exploring the castle.

Gluten-free, vegan and dairy-free alternatives are available.
