Upwey Wishing Well, winner of the best tearoom of the year 2023/24 by Dorset Tourism Awards, is one of Dorset’s best-kept secrets. In the heart of Upwey village near Weymouth, you can find the famous wishing well, tearooms, and subtropical gardens with outstanding natural beauty. The magic feel of the place will instantly make you happy.
The staff are extremely friendly, making sure to say hello to everyone who comes in, giving the place a wonderful, friendly atmosphere.
When visiting, you can park close by in the church car park, were a small donation is suggested. Walking from there to the tea room is something from a postcard with pretty thatched cottages and lots of natural beauty.
The tea rooms offer breakfasts, lunches, light bites, afternoon tea and some of the most delicious-looking cakes.
If you’re not in the mood for food, you can enjoy a freshly ground cup of coffee in the gardens.
Wine and local West Dorset cider are also available.
You can also pre-book and go for Sunday lunch, enjoy your meal with your loved ones, and go for a stroll in the gardens afterward.
Stepping from the tearooms to the gardens will take your breath away. They’re magnificent. A huge willow tree covers the gardens, and giant rhubarb plants and palm trees can be seen all around.
There is ample seating outside, which, on a warm, sunny day, will be the perfect setting for lunch or afternoon tea.
You can hire the whole place for private events such as weddings, hen do’s, parties and so on.
Imagine hosting a party at this amazing place or having your wedding reception here, with all the most amazing photo opportunities.
As you walk around the paths, you will come to the wishing well. Wishing wells are associated with goodwill and fortune, and they are magical places that can make your wishes come true ✨.
Upwey wishing well has been known for this as far back as the 20th century.
Visitors are said to participate in a unique ritual. They drink some of the spring water from a glass and then throw the remains over their left shoulder to help grant their wishes.
The well was said to have been a favoured visiting place for King George III. It is believed a seat was placed by the well for him to enjoy when he visited.
Weather-dependent, you may not be able to walk up close to the well, but on some days, you can go close and make a wish.
There is seating all along the river for you to sit and relax, and the setting couldn’t be any more stunning.
The gardens are surprisingly larger than they look, and you can spend a lovely amount of time exploring the area. There are little paths to follow and bridges to cross, and there are lots of interesting plants and statues to admire.
As you walk through, flowing water can be heard throughout, and each angle you look at is shrouded in greenery, flowers, and water features.
There is a lookout point overlooking the rivers that are perfect for sitting and reflecting—the ideal spot to forget about life’s stress and overwhelm.
It’s always useful to check out the tea room’s website for any events that are taking place.
The most recent being a superhero and Barbie breakfast and easter egg trails with the easter bunny present.
A magical setting for little ones and perfect to fire up their imaginations.
There has also been a holistic fair that includes tarot and palm reading. The wishing well is perfect for these events, and you can keep up to date with the next ones online.
Visiting is highly recommended. The staff is the friendliest around, and the food is delicious. The freshly baked cakes are to die for, and the surroundings are beautiful.
If you’re ever near Weymouth, then try to visit this magical place. Enjoy!
