Swanage is a beautiful destination for hikers. We’ve discovered a scenic hike with numerous stunning views along a mild to moderate 5.8 km route.
It is an out-and-back route starting at the picturesque Peveril Point in Swanage.
This hike has breathtaking views of the coastline, dramatic clifftops, caves and a lighthouse. On clear days, dolphins and seals have been spotted in the sea in this area.

Since this is a loop trail, you’ll end up back in Swanage; there are plenty of places to eat and drink in the town to enjoy after your hike.
The views of Swanage as you begin your journey are stunning. With its gracefully curved coastline surrounded by countryside, it’s a perfect spot to pause and admire.
The sparkling ocean and bobbing boats on a sunny day will always be a beautiful sight.
Be aware that a lot of the hike is along cliff tops, although mostly on a path. Take care when walking, and stay safe throughout.
The sound of the sea crashing against the cliff edge is both brilliant and calming, adding a peaceful vibe to your walk.
The terrain varies throughout, but a lot of the walk is stony pathways. Hiking boots aren’t essential; however, they’re always a safer option when walking on different paths.

Walking towards Durlston Castle, you’ll come across activities to keep little ones entertained. Natural wood play areas and trails liven the walk-up if you’re with children.
This is also a great walk for dogs, remember to keep them on a lead along the cliff top and if passing livestock.
Durlston Castle is a lovely spot to visit along the way. Visit the Seventhwave café and restaurant for a quick drink and bite to eat or visit the shop.
The country park surrounding the area is a lovely spot to stop for a picnic.
Walking down the steps from the castle you’ll come across the Great Globe, constructed of Portland Stone and weighs around 40 tonnes.
It was brought to Swanage by sea after its construction in Greenwich in 1887. It’s a fantastic landmark to explore during the walk; the views are amazing.
A wide range of birds can be seen ducking and diving within the cliff tops; varieties such as Puffins, European Shags, Seagulls, Guillemots, and more can be seen.
Tilly Whim caves are full of history and folklore, offering an interesting and exciting feature to your walk. The caves are what is left after the area was used as a quarry in the 19th century.
It was also said to be used by smugglers to hide their contraband. Today, it is closed to the public and is home to birds and bats.
You can admire the caves from afar, and it’s a great photo opportunity.

There are a few steep inclines and declines, so take care when walking and come prepared with water and sun cream.
This walk can be busier on warm days, and on cooler days, it can be secluded and quiet.
The lighthouse is your final destination before looping back to the start. The lighthouse was built in 1881 and is in operation 24 hours a day.
It also holds two self-catering holiday cottages.
The walk is so beautiful that looping around is a treat as you get to experience everything again. It’s an excellent hike, and as it’s not too challenging can be enjoyed with the family.
