The Blue Pool dates back nearly 400 years ago and was used to mine for Purbeck Blue Ball Clay. Today it is open to the public, giving you freedom to wander around the magnificent woods, taking in the stunning scenery.
The pool can appear in a whole host of colours, such as green, turquoise and blue, due to the light diffraction of the clay particles suspended in the water.
There is a wide range of wildlife in the nature reserve, giving them a safe and thriving home. See the likes of peacocks, badgers, squirrels, deer, lizards, dragonflies, owls and, if you’re lucky, a white-tailed eagle.
Seeing the flourishing flora and fauna will excite all ages, keeping little ones busy spotting the animals and insects and the older ones admiring the beautiful backdrop.
The Blue Pool just became the home of the UK’s largest rope bridge; it opened this year (2024) and is a whopping 50 metres long and 10 feet from the ground.
From the tree tops, you can spot new viewpoints and look out for wildlife in the trees. The rope bridge adds a fun and exciting touch to The Blue Pool and is a great addition.
Remember to wear sensible footwear when crossing and try to resist the urge to rock or jump!
Not only will the children love being in and around Blue Pool, but they’ll also love the amazing play area. Complete with a younger area with a small slide and play house for toddlers or for the bigger children, there is a woodland obstacle course, swings, slide and climbing wall.
There are benches for the adults that are able to sit down, plenty of shade and good old-fashioned outdoor fun.
Established in 1935 the tearooms offer beautifully decorated art deco dining rooms and an outdoor terrace to eat, drink and enjoy the views.
Selling a range of food and drinks, including breakfasts, light lunches, cakes, a variety of locally brewed beers, cider, and more! The building is beautiful, and the little added touches of Art Deco add to the aesthetic.
Private functions such as weddings and parties are also held here. A perfect setting to celebrate with family and friends.
There is also an onsite gift shop selling items such as mugs, bags, candles, local artist items, toys, games and so on. You can also enjoy an Italian Gelato ice cream from the ice cream parlour.
