In the picturesque town of Lyme Regis, you’ll come across and quaint artisan quarter of the town. The creative heart of Lyme Regis and bursting with beautiful works of art, handmade jewellery and gorgeous handmade pottery.
The Town Mill is at the centre of this colourful spot in town and is bursting with history.
From being left derelict and nearly being demolished, the mill has had a colourful past, but with the help of dedicated volunteers, the mill is now open to visitors and free to explore.
The ancient mill dates as far back as 1340 and was used to mill wheat for bread and malt for beer; it was granted a licence by Edward lll.
Unfortunately, during the Civil War in 1644, the mill was damaged but was later rebuilt within 4 years.
In the 1800s, there were over 20,000 watermills in the UK, and due to cheap imported grain and improved technology, the mill struggled and eventually closed down in 1926.
Over the years, the building was left derelict and eventually was owned by the West Dorset District Council, and by 1991 wanted to demolish the site.
To save the mill, a group of dedicated residents set up the Town Mill Trust and raised over £500,000 to save the beloved mill.
Today, the mill stands proudly in the town, and it’s all thanks to the committed and hardworking volunteers who have put their all into restoring the mill.
Visitors can visit for free, although donations are warmly welcomed.
You’ll be able to visit each floor of the mill and meet a miller volunteer. The volunteers are friendly and love to share their vast knowledge of the milling methods and history of the building.
Self guided tours take you around the building, exploring unique areas and show you the water wheel in action.
The millers today follow the traditional milling method and produce The Town Mill flour available to buy in the small gift shop, along with baking kits and memorabilia.
You can purchase Town Mill flour and enjoy it at home, knowing it was made in a traditional and wholesome way.
The thriving courtyard is a beautiful spot with seating and a happy atmosphere. Around here, local artistic businesses surround the area and make it a creative hub of the town.
You’ll see shops selling handmade pottery, the Lyme Regis Brewery, sewing boutique and more.
To the front of the building, you’ll see a delightful silversmith offering stunning handmade jewellery and the beautiful Molesworth and Bird, showcasing seaweed art with beautiful prints, cards and gifts.
Also located close by is the Malthouse Gallery often showing interesting exhibitions from artists and local talent.
